The US consultant engineering company Black & Veatch International has been awarded a contract to provide Owner’s Engineer services in support of construction management for a supercritical coal-fired power project in Shanghai. The Waigaoqiao thermal power plant will be constructed for the Shanghai Municipal Electric Power Co (SMEPC). The plant will comprise two steam turbines capable of up to 1800 MW. Supercritical boiler technology allows the coal to burn more efficiently. Black & Veatch will provide construction management and consulting services, assisting SMEPC in managing equipment suppliers during design, manufacturing, construction and startup of the plant. The company expects to begin work this month and continue until commercial operation of the second unit, scheduled for the end of 2004, is achieved. The first unit is expected to enter commercial service in the middle of 2004.
