The energy department’s new funding opportunity will seek to reduce manufacturing, installation, and permitting costs for homes, businesses, and utilities in the US.

Solar technology developers can seek support under the initiative to advance both hardware efficiency and reduce soft costs besides helping making the transition from lab-scale ideas to prototype phases or move early-scale projects to commercial launch.

The Energy Department’s SunShot Initiative seeks to reduce solar energy costs by 75% by 2020, making subsidy-free solar energy cost-competitive with other forms of energy.

Launched in 2007, the initiative has thus far helped launch 50 small business that have in turn secured $1.7bn in private sector investments.
