Out of the ten new R&D projects, six are directed towards producing and delivering hydrogen at less than $4 per gallon gasoline equivalent, while the remaining four are directed towards hydrogen delivery, which includes compression, storage and dispensing at the station.

The department is looking to develop technologies that can cheaply produce and deliver hydrogen to power fuel cells from renewable resources, thereby reducing energy use and carbon emissions.

However, developing these technologies will depend on the full commercialization of fuel cell electric vehicles and other fuel cell technologies.

The six firms that will carry out hydrogen production R&D projects include FuelCell Energy, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, National Renewable Energy Laboratory, University of Hawaii, Sandia National Laboratories and University of Colorado.

The hydrogen delivery R&D projects will be carried out by Southwest Research Institute, Nuvera Fuel Cells, Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Wiretough Cylinders.
