According to Luminant, it has submitted its application for a license to build and operate two US-advanced pressurized water reactors (US-APWR) at the Comanche Peak site. The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is also currently reviewing the US-APWR design from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) for certification.

After an evaluation of nuclear generating technologies, Luminant has selected this design as its technology of choice. MHI submitted an application to have the US-APWR design certified by the NRC in December 2007, said the company.

Mike Blevins, executive vice president and chief nuclear officer of Luminant, said: “This is another step to obtain a permit for safe and clean nuclear energy. We look forward to provide additional information to the NRC throughout the review process.”

Luminant, a subsidiary of Energy Future Holdings, is a power generation business, including mining, wholesale marketing and trading, construction and development operations. It has more than 18,300 megawatts of generation in Texas, including 2,300 megawatts of nuclear and 5,800 megawatts of coal-fueled generation capacity, claims the company. It is also a purchaser of wind-generated electricity in Texas.
