Chinese power company Shanghai Electric and Uticao have recently announced a joint collaboration to build a coal-fired power plant in Ras Al Khaimah by investing AED1.5bn.

The power plant, which is expected to be completed in 2015, will generate 270MW of power when fully functional, according to Times of Oman.

Utico managing director Richard Menezes noted that the facility is a milestone development for the Arab world and would enable GCC countries to meet their utility requirements as well as showcase their commitment toward clean, green energy resources.

"Clean coal-fired energy is acknowledged to be even cleaner and greener than gas-reliant energy. By deploying Shanghai Electric’s superior energy-efficient and proven technology at the plant, we are confident of reducing flue gas desulphurization, carbon dioxide emissions almost to zero, and setting the benchmark for cleaner energy to the world," Menezes said.
