Employees at the Glennies Creek underground and Camberwell open cut mines were informed that the mines would be shut down and further details will be revealed soon.

The decision is part of Vale’s efforts to reduce costs and streamline operations.

Located in eastern Australia, the Integra complex produces about 4.5 million tons of coal each year, including semi-hard, semi-soft metallurgical coals and thermal or ‘steam’ coal.

Vale owns 61.2% stake in Integra while a group of Asian companies, including Toyota Industries, Posco, JFE Holdings and Nippon Steel hold the remaining share.

Last year, the Brazilian mining giant announced plans to sell up to 20% stake in its Australian coal operations, projects and mines.
