The technology has allowed the refinery to meet its fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) unit nitrogen oxide reduction target, without shutdown for installation.

FCC units can convert petroleum crude oil feedstocks into valuable products such as gasoline.

The new CONOx system will allow refiners to reduce emissions with low capital cost technology.

The technology will also modify the operation of the FCC unit, when it requires to meet FCC limits and will meet Valero’s needs and provide necessary NOx reduction.

Praxair refinery and hydrogen applications director Subodh Ganguly said for years, the Praxair refining specialists worked with refiners to gain knowledge on FCC units.

"Our experience enabled us to implement FCC improvements with minimal downtime and an ever-present focus on safety," Ganguly added.
