The wind farm is being constructed off the coast in the German North Sea in the Exclusive Economic Zone 2 near BorWin, 97km from the shore and

It will consist of 67 Siemens’ 6MW wind turbines that are being installed using Fred Oslen’s Bold Tern and Seajacks’ Scylla vessels.

Veja Mate CEO Henrik Scheinemann said: “First power is indeed a significant milestone in the construction phase of our Project.”

Wind Turbine Generator project manager/Deputy engineering procurement and construction director Thomas Gellert said: “The entire project team has been working hard making sure this and upcoming milestones are reached successfully and are well deserving of our congratulations.”

The wind farm, which is expected to cost about €1.9bn, is owned by Highland Group, Siemens Financial Services and Copenhagen Infrastructure II.

Construction of the wind farm began in April last year and it is expected to be fully constructed and commissioned by mid-2017.

The grounded monopile structures can reach depths ranging between 39m – 41m. Each monopile structure weighs 1300 tonnes with a diameter of 7.8m and lengths between 76.2 – 84.4m.

Electricity generated from the wind farm will be first transmitted to the offshore substation through BorWin Beta and then to the onshore converter station in Diele, Germany.

After the construction is complete and the wind farm is fully commissioned, it is expected produce as much as 1.6TWh of energy to power at least 400,000 German households and can offset at least 700,000 tons of CO2 and 13,000 tons of SO2 emissions.
