Vestas is to boost its presence in Latin America with the construction of a 100 MW wind power facility in northern Chile.
The wind turbine manufacturer says that it has started building the Talinay Oriente wind power plant, which will be the largest wind farm in Chile and which will almost double the country’s wind capacity.
Vestas will deploy its 2 MW wind turbine units at the project, which it acquired from a local developer.
The plant will make a major contribution to Vestas’ goal of covering all of its own electricity needs with renewables by 2012.
Construction of Talinay Oriente will be completed in early 2012.
“We believe this is a very good initiative,” commented Marcelo Tokman, VP of Sales in South America for Vestas. “We are contributing to the internal objectives of raising Vestas’ electricity consumption of clean energy sources and we are supporting the Chilean government in increasing the country’s energy independence and its share of renewables for the coming years.”
