Virginia’s health department, Environmental Quality department and the Mines, Minerals and Energy department had collectively studied the possible risks and benefits of undertaking uranium mining for one year before arriving at the proposed framework

The US state hosts the largest uranium deposit in the country, with the capacity to power American nuclear plants for two years and considerably sustain the state’s economy.

Group founder and Governor Robert McDonnell was quoted by The Washington Post as saying that an upcoming meeting with stakeholders will review public comments before the ban’s status is considered.

"I have formed no prior opinion on whether mining should be permitted.

"The overriding consideration is whether uranium mining and milling can be conducted with a high degree of public safety, and whether suitable assurances can be given that the air, water, health, and well-being of the citizens will be protected," McDonnell said.

The group’s report to the Coal and Energy Commission in Virginia laid down guidelines on various factors including air and water monitoring, health of miners and residents, cost of regulation, and possible permitting/ licensing fees and mining tax.
