Under the contract, Voith Hydro and Stuart Olson will design, supply, install and commission four synchronous condensers, each rated at 250 mega volt amps reactive (MVAR).

The Riel electrical station is located near the Winnipeg and at the junction of major high voltage power lines.

Voith, as the consortium lead, will be responsible for the commissioning activities, while Stuart Olson will oversee the civil, infrastructure work and mechanical and electrical balance of plant, including equipment installation.

As major powerhouses and consumption centers are located at long distances, the synchronous condensers will help maintain grid stability.

For the Riel project, the assemblies of synchronous condensers are sealed to allow hydrogen cooling. The condensers, which do not feature turbines, will support the Manitoba Hydro grid in reactive power (MegaVar).

Work on the condenser units is planned to commence this year with plans to commission in 2018.
