The companies will work with BEH for around nine months to further explore and advance the financial and technical details of the potential project in Kozloduy.

The companies are likely to sign a binding contract in 2014 and construction of the proposed plant is expected to begin by the end of 2016. The plant is likely to sell its output on a commercial basis.

Westinghouse president and CEO Danny Roderick said that Bulgaria is focused on advancing the opportunity to develop Kozloduy Unit 7 nuclear plant.

"The selection of the Westinghouse AP1000 Generation III+ reactor for Kozloduy Unit 7 will ensure implementation of the highest safety standards as well as give Bulgaria a maximum degree of certainty with respect to investment, licensing to European and global standards, with accelerated and modern construction," added Roderick.

Westinghouse is developing four AP1000 units in China and the first of them is nearing construction completion, and has four such units in early stages of construction in the US.
