Awarded by the Empresa Nacional de Residuos Radiactivos (ENRESA), the multi-million dollar contract covers main engineering of the project, including a revision of the generic design and development of the detailed engineering of the facility’s main buildings, including HLW, container reception and services and auxiliary systems.

The company will collaborate Empresarios Agrupados’ partners, TRSA and GHESA for the project, which includes civil, mechanical, electrical and instrumentation and control (I&C), process analysis and the integration of other modules.

Westinghouse Southern Europe vice president and managing director Javier González said the contract reflects Enresa’s confidence in the quality, reliability and competitiveness of Westinghouse engineering services.

”In addition, this contract further demonstrates Westinghouse’s commitment to the Spanish nuclear market, which we continue to see as very important,” González added.

Started in April 2013, the project is expected to complete in five years.

Located in central Spain, the interim storage facility is likely to commence operation at the end of 2017 following regulatory approvals, public review and receipt of construction and operation licenses.
