GRDA will source the energy for the data centre from the Canadian Hills Wind project in west central Oklahoma increasing the renewable energy consumption of the internet major.

The joint venture is the first utility provider contract for Google as well as the first wind energy power purchase agreement (PPA) for GRDA.

Pursuant to an earlier energy supply agreement between Google and GRDA, signed earlier in 2012, Google will pay GRDA a premium to purchase the renewable energy.

Commenting on the development Google technical infrastructure senior VP Urs Hoelzle remarked that the company is hopeful of signing more such agreements to increase its share of renewable energy usage.

GRDA CEO Dan Sullivan added, "In addition to increasing Google’s access to renewable energy, we are also offsetting part of GRDA’s wind acquisition cost through the premium Google has agreed to pay."
