The agreement directs WPS to invest $300m in pollution control technology besides paying a civil penalty of $1.2m and spending $6m on environmental mitigation projects.
WPS will install the new pollution control technology at one of its Pulliam plant in Green Bay or the Weston plant in Rothschild to continuously operate the new and existing pollution controls, and to comply with stringent emission rates and annual tonnage limitations.
Department of Justice Natural Resources assistant attorney general Ignacia S. Moreno remarked that the transaction will cut down thousands of tons of harmful air pollution annually to improve air quality in Wisconsin and downwind areas.
EPA Enforcement and Compliance Assurance assistant administrator Cynthia Giles added, "EPA is committed to protecting communities from the pollution problems that matter most, including reducing air pollution from the largest sources of emissions."
Spending on the environmental mitigation projects includes $4m to be spent on a renewable energy resource enhancement project; $1.2m on a wood stove change-out project; and up to $300,000 on a community digestor project.
