Called the Alpine Power Plant, the natural gas-fueled facility will have access to the convergence of existing interstate natural gas pipelines and electric transmission lines.

The company has entered into property options for around 170 acres of land.

Wolverine spokesman Ken Bradstreet said:"Our Alpine Power Plant will provide a nice balance to Wolverine’s existing power supply portfolio, while at the same time increasing electrical reliability in Northern Michigan and complementing the ever increasing amount of renewable energy in Michigan.

"The Alpine Power Plant will provide a major boost to the local economy."

The company plans to submit the proposal to Elmira Township Planning Commission and the Otsego County Planning Commission by the end of next month.

An air quality permit will also be filed with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality.

Wolverine is a not-for-profit electric cooperative that provides electric power to six electric cooperatives across the Michigan.
