The project dubbed as the Alexandroupolis Independent Natural Gas System (INGS) will see a floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) receiving, storage and regasification unit (FSRU) developed by Gastrade which will be connected to the Greek National Natural Gas Transmission System.

According to the Greek utility, the FSRU will create a 28km onshore gas transmission pipeline which will act as a new gateway to supply regasified LNG to the south eastern and central European markets including Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia, Ukraine and others.

Under the scope of the contract, the subsea team of the Scottish firm will carry out design and engineering study of the FSRU and its subsystems. Based on these, a final investment decision has been planned by Gastrade for the Alexandroupolis offshore gas project later this year.

Wood Group Specialist Technical Solutions business CEO Bob MacDonald said: “This contract brings our global expertise and technical solutions to a new client and we look forward to working with Gastrade S.A. as the main engineering contractor for developing this FEED.

“Our subsea capabilities combined with the engineering proficiency of our people and cost effective technical solutions, position us well to deliver this milestone European project.”

Wood Group’s study is expected to be completed by the third quarter and will be partly financed by the European Commission under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) funding tool.

In December last year, global LNG carrier company GasLog joined the Alexandroupolis offshore gas project by acquiring a 20% stake. It is expected to help the project through its expertise in the management and operation of LNG carriers and FSRUs.
