Investment in the plant is expected to help the government supply power to the investors, mining firms in particular, which have been intimidated with electricity rationing led by low power generation.

Inga hydroelectric dam is expected to generate 4,500MW of electricity and most of the benefits would be experienced by South Africa.

The expansion project is expected to cost about $80bn and banks such as the World Bank, the African Development Bank, the European Investment Bank, JFPI Corporation, bilateral donors, and the southern African power companies have expressed interest in funding the project.

Following the expansion, the Grand Inga is expected to produce 39,000MW in order to address the energy needs of the African continent.
