The Dynamic Power Resource (DPR) energy storage system has been installed by US-based Xtreme Power.

The DPR system digitally smoothes the wind farm’s output to ±1 MW per minute by rapidly absorbing or releasing power to shield Hawaiian Electric Company’s grid system and local customers from disturbances caused by varying winds at the farm.

The custom-built storage system has the ability to double its storage capabilities to meet additional capacity requirements in the future.

The US Department of Energy provided $117m towards construction of the wind project, which began in 2010.

The project is being built by US-based firm Kahuku Wind Power, a unit of First Wind.
