Other projects for which Higman was responsible include the gas production units at both the Bintulu and Mossel Bay gas-to-liquids plants and the IGCC/hydrogen production facility at Shell’s Pernis, Netherlands refinery. Before acceptance of a corporate management position at Lurgi in 1997, he served as head of gas technology.

Currently, Higman is an independent consultant specialized in gasification and related technologies. He is graduated in 1966 from the University of Oxford. He received his M.Sc. from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. In addition to co-authoring the book Gasification Higman has presented papers on gasification technology at many different conferences. He is also a contributor to Ullmanns Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry. He has also been a visiting lecturer at the College of Petroleum and Energy Studies in Oxford. He has a many patents in the field.
