Nexans stated that this project is aimed at supplying reliable, economic and sufficient supply of electricity to the Syros, Paros, Tinos, Mykonos and Naxos islands in the country.
The interconnector will be laid between the city of Lavrion on the Greek mainland and the island of Syros. The project is aimed at producing reliable electricity supply of Cyclades Islands, while addressing local environmental concerns.
By interconnecting the Cyclades Islands, ADMIE plans to reduce the number of the existing power stations that operate on heavy fuel oil and light fuel oil (diesel) and set up the necessary infrastructure to tap the significant renewable power potential in the region.
The turnkey contract was awarded to Nexans within the phase ‘C’ of the project. It includes seabed survey, design, manufacturing, installation and protection of a 150kV high voltage alternating current (HVAC) three-core submarine power cable with an internal fiber optical element.
The route is 108km with an expected maximum water depth of 300m. The submarine cables for this project will be manufactured by its Norway subsidiary at its Halden plant, while the fiber optical cable will be produced at its Norwegian facility in Rognan. The cable laying vessel Skagerrak will install the cable.
Delivery and commissioning of the Interconnection of Cyclades Islands are scheduled to take place within August 2020.

Few days ago, the company had won a contract to supply over 200km of 245kV high voltage alternating current (HVAC) subsea export cable system for the near shore section of Hornsea 2 wind farm. Ørsted, the project developer awarded the contract.
