Prysmian Group has finalized a €125m contract with Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO) for an interconnector project between the Island of Crete and mainland Greece Peloponnese region.

The Crete-Peloponnese contract involves the design, supply, installation and commissioning of a high voltage alternating current (HVAC) cable system.

The cable system will include 150 kV three-core cables with XLPE insulation and double-wire armouring.

With a distance of 135km, the interconnector system is expected to reach depths of up to 950 meters.

The award of the contract to Prysmian by IPTO, which is the transmission system operator for Greece’s power grid, was announced in October.

Prysmian Group project BU EVP Hakan Ozmen said: “We are very proud to be part of such a strategic project that shall create this important link between Crete and the Greek mainland for the very first time.

“Our long-lasting collaboration with IPTO shall enable us to demonstrate once more the quality and state-of-the-art of our products and solutions.”

The company will produce the submarine cables at its Arco Felice (Naples) plant and will be installed at sea using the Giulio Verne vessel, which is part of the company’s fleet and is claimed to be an advanced vessel in the world.

The delivery and commissioning of the project is expected to take place in 2020.

Ozmen said: “With the trust IPTO again places in us with this contract, we can proudly re-affirm Prysmian leadership in submarine cable interconnectors, as this project stands alongside many others we have secured in recent times.”

In September, the firm won a contract for supply of a new cable system to upgrade the Cyclades power grids in Greece.

The €21m contract was awarded by ITPO for two interconnections between the Cyclades islands that include Evia, Andros and Tinos.

Under the contract, Prysmian will design, supply and install two turnkey HVAC cable systems, which are designed to transmit a power of 200 MVA, for the interconnection project.
