RWE and TotalEnergies have chosen the Port of Eemshaven in the northern Dutch province of Groningen as the operational base for turbine assembly and construction activities for their OranjeWind offshore wind project in the Dutch North Sea.
To facilitate this, the OranjeWind joint venture has signed an agreement with Buss Terminal Eemshaven.
Construction at the offshore wind site is set to commence in early 2026. Buss Terminal Eemshaven will manage the offloading, storage, handling, and pre-assembly of major turbine components and inter-array cables for the wind farm. Monopile foundations will be transported directly to the offshore installation site from Sif’s production facility at the Port of Rotterdam. Turbine installation at the OranjeWind site, located approximately 278 km from Eemshaven, is scheduled to begin in early 2027, with full commissioning expected by the end of that year.
RWE is already utilising the Buss Terminal in Eemshaven for handling monopile foundations for its Danish offshore wind project, Thor, while preparing for the construction of its German offshore wind project, Nordseecluster A. Under the agreement for OranjeWind, a marshalling area of 35-40 hectares—equivalent to approximately 55 football pitches—will be allocated to accommodate both the OranjeWind and Nordseecluster B projects simultaneously.
OranjeWind is expected to generate around 3 terawatt hours of renewable electricity annually, sufficient to power more than one million Dutch households.
Turbine manufacturer Vestas will supply 53 of its 15-megawatt (MW) turbines for the OranjeWind project, while Sif will produce the monopiles and secondary steel components. Jan De Nul Group has been contracted to handle various transportation and installation activities for the foundations and turbines.
TKF will manufacture and supply the inter-array cables, with DEME responsible for their transportation and installation. Additionally, DEME has been contracted to install the secondary steel components for the foundations. Grid operator TenneT will facilitate the offshore grid connection, linking the inter-array cables to its offshore substation. From there, export cables will transmit electricity to the onshore high-voltage substation in Wijk aan Zee.
Upon completion, Vestas will provide servicing for the wind turbines under a five-year service agreement, followed by a long-term operational support agreement.
