French firm TotalEnergies has taken investment decisions on six new battery storage projects in Germany, with nearly €160m earmarked for their development.
The projects will be developed by Kyon Energy, a subsidiary acquired in 2024. Once operational, the six facilities will have a combined storage capacity of 221MW.
The projects will predominantly utilise batteries from Saft, another TotalEnergies affiliate known for its advanced battery technology. Construction activities began towards the end of 2024, with the aim to have the facilities operational by early 2026.
According to TotalEnergies, the initiative underscores the company’s commitment to enhancing the stability and flexibility of Germany’s power system.
TotalEnergies chairman and CEO Patrick Pouyanné said: “We are delighted with this significant step forward in the development of our integrated power activities in Germany, Europe’s largest electricity market. The implementation and integration of all these battery projects will allow us to supply our customers with clean firm power, contributing directly to our targeted 12% profitability in this activity.”
TotalEnergies’ German portfolio includes 7GW of onshore wind and solar projects in development and 200MW installed or in progress; 6.5GW net of offshore wind projects in development; 2GW of storage capacity in the pipeline with 321 MW under construction; and 9GW of electricity aggregation managed by Quadra Energy.
Additionally, the company has developed and operates 6,900 charging points, including 1,100 high-power charging stations in the country.
In December 2024, TotalEnergies signed deal to acquire German renewable energy developer VSB Group in a deal worth €1.57bn. The completion of the deal is subject to approval from merger control authorities.
