Xcel Energy has confirmed the long-term operation of its Monticello Nuclear Generating Plant, a pivotal step in supporting its clean energy ambitions. This follows the recent renewal of the plant’s operating licence by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).
The renewed federal licence permits the carbon-free facility to operate for an additional 20 years, extending its potential lifespan until 2050. However, this extended operation remains subject to approval by state regulators. Monticello’s continued operation is integral to Xcel Energy’s strategy to achieve 100% carbon-free electricity.
Xcel Energy chairman, president and CEO Bob Frenzel said: “The Monticello plant has long been an essential source of clean, safe and reliable energy, powering more than 500,000 homes annually in the Upper Midwest.
“As the only 24/7 carbon-free energy source we have, nuclear energy will be key to accelerating our journey to a clean energy future while ensuring we also meet the unprecedented growth in our customers’ demand for electricity.”
The licence renewal is the culmination of a multi-year process during which the NRC conducted exhaustive inspections, audits, and reviews. These assessments ensured that the plant met or exceeded stringent standards for safety, environmental impact, and operational performance.
Xcel Energy intends to seek matching state-level approvals for the extended operating period. The company has already secured authorisation from the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (PUC) to operate the plant through 2040, covering the first half of the licence period. It plans to revisit the PUC in the future to gain approval for the remaining decade.
The Monticello plant generates enough electricity to power 500,000 homes and is a cornerstone of the regional economy. It is the largest employer and taxpayer in the Monticello area. Together with the Prairie Island Nuclear Generating Plant near Red Wing, Minnesota, Monticello accounts for nearly 25% of the electricity consumed by Xcel Energy customers in the Upper Midwest.
Monticello’s extended operation underscores the role of nuclear power as a reliable, carbon-free energy source, vital for achieving long-term decarbonisation targets. As Xcel Energy progresses towards its clean energy vision, facilities like Monticello will remain critical to ensuring energy reliability and sustainability in the region.
