Midia Gas Development (MGD) project comprises the development of Ana and Doina gas fields, which are located in the Black Sea, 120km off the Romanian coast, in 70m of water.

The XV Midia shallow block is owned by a joint venture of Black Sea Oil & Gas (65%, operator), Petro Ventures Resources (20%), and Gas Plus International (15%). Black Sea Oil & Gas is a subsidiary of Carlyle International Energy Partners.

Black Sea Oil & Gas completed detailed feasibility study and environmental assessment for the offshore project in 2018. Final investment decision (FID) along with commencement of construction of the project was announced in February 2019.

The MGD project will be developed with an estimated investment of $400m. It is expected to be commissioned by early-2021 and produce one billion cubic meters of gas a year, which represents 10% of Romania’s consumption.

The Ana and Doina fields, discovered in 2007 and 1995 respectively, are located in the XV Midia shallow block of the Histria Basin, which encompasses an area of 1,900km² in the continental shelf of Black Sea.

The field reservoirs are made of shallow marine sandstones and are of the same fault trend. The reservoirs are estimated to hold gross contingent resources of 320 billion cubic feet of gas.

A number of prospects for future development are present in the underexplored Romanian continental shelf of the Black Sea, apart from the Ana and Doina fields.

The field development plan for the MGD project includes drilling of five production wells, including one at Doina field and four at the Ana field, and installation of a subsea production system at the Doina field.

The subsea gas production system will be tied-back to an unmanned production platform installed at the Ana field through an 18km-long pipeline.

The Ana wellhead platform will feature four platform wells, helideck, temporary pig receiver and launcher facilities, chemical storage and injection pumps, equipment room, lifeboat, crane, and other ancillary facilities. The platform is being fabricated at GSP Shipyard in Agigea.

Gas transportation details

A 126km-long gas pipeline will transport gas from the Ana platform to an onshore location. A 4.1km underground pipeline will deliver the gas transported by the pipeline to a new gas treatment plant (GTP) located in Corbu commune, Constanta county.

The GTP will comprise pig receiver, compressors, chemical storage and regeneration facility, control room, metering system, and power generators.

A gas metering station will be constructed at the GTP site to deliver processed gas through a 26km-long export pipeline to the National Transmission System (NTS) operated by Transgaz under a 15-year gas transmission contract.

Black Sea Oil has also signed a gas sales agreement with a Romania-based subsidiary of ENGIE.

Xodus Group carried out the front-end engineering and design (FEED) for the MGD project.

Green Partners was subcontracted by Xodus Group to carry out environmental and social impact assessment for the project.

GSP Offshore was awarded the engineering, procurement, construction, installation and commissioning contract as well as the development drilling contract. The scope of work includes drilling, aviation, logistics, and supply of service vessels. The company will use GSP Uranus, a three-legged self-elevating, cantilever-type jack-up rig to perform the drilling.
