True North Solar Farm is a 321MWdc (238MWac) photovoltaic plant located in the US state of Texas.

The project was developed by Avangrid, a member of the Iberdrola Group. True North is the company’s largest solar project in the country.

Avangrid secured approval from the Texas federal government in 2022 to build the photovoltaic plant. The construction works began in July 2023.

The solar farm achieved commercial operations in March 2025.

The development of True North entailed an investment of $369m in central Texas. It is projected to contribute over $40m in property taxes throughout its lifetime, benefiting public services in the surrounding communities.

At the peak of construction, the project employed around 300 people. It now supports several permanent, full-time jobs for ongoing operations at the facility.

True North Solar Farm Location

The True North Solar Farm is situated in Falls County, Texas. Falls County is part of the Waco, Texas Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The project lies in proximity to Temple, a neighbouring city in Bell County. Technology company Meta is building a data centre at this location.

True North Infrastructure Details

True North is Avangrid’s first solar project in Texas.

The facility comprises more than 488,000 solar modules, which collectively generate approximately 238MW alternating current (ac) or 321MW direct current (MWdc) of clean energy. The capacity is sufficient to power nearly 60,000 US homes annually.

True North utilises advanced solar trackers that allow the solar panels to follow the sun’s trajectory throughout the day, thereby optimising exposure and increasing overall efficiency.

Photovoltaic panels are made up of individual cells that absorb light particles (photons), releasing electrons and generating DC. This flow of DC electricity is then converted into AC by inverters.

The infrastructure includes two main power transformers, which convert the generated electricity to appropriate voltage levels for distribution.

Avangrid also developed a dedicated operations and maintenance facility at the site for long-term performance and reliability of the solar farm.

Contractors Involved

Avangrid collaborated with New Mexico-based Array Technologies, a long-term supplier, to procure solar trackers for the True North Solar Farm. It entailed an investment of around $30m by Avangrid.

A significant portion of the tracker components was sourced from Array’s manufacturing facility in Albuquerque, as well as from other regional supply partners.

Black & Veatch, an engineering, procurement, construction, and consulting (EPC) firm, was contracted to design and build the solar farm. The company has worked on more than 50GW of utility-scale solar projects globally.

Power Purchase Agreement

True North is supplying electricity to the Texas grid and supporting Meta’s operations, including its planned data centre in nearby Temple, which will be the company’s second data centre facility in Texas.

In March 2023, Avangrid signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) to supply renewable energy to Meta. Since 2020, Meta has powered its global operations with 100% renewable energy.

According to a US Department of Energy report, data centres could account for up to 12% of total electricity consumption by 2028. Facilities such as True North will help in ensuring the resiliency and reliability of the Texas electrical grid.

Avangrid in Texas

Avangrid has been active in Texas for more than 15 years. With the addition of the True North Solar Farm, the company now operates seven energy projects across Texas, with a combined installed capacity of nearly 1.6GW.

Collectively, these developments represent over $2bn in direct investment, support more than 65 full-time positions, and have generated approximately $118m in tax revenue since 2009.
